Welcome

## Your Great Ocean Road coastal escape

The Great Ocean Road is a road trip like no other. It hugs the edge of the Southern Ocean as it winds past towering limestone cliffs, golden surf beaches and the ancient rainforests of the Otways. The road was built by returned servicemen after the First World War and is the world’s largest war memorial. Today it is one of Australia’s most loved holiday destinations.

Spend your days surfing at Bells Beach, spotting koalas in the treetops, chasing waterfalls through fern-filled gullies and watching the sun set over the Twelve Apostles. Laid-back towns like Torquay, Lorne and Apollo Bay offer great cafés, beachside dining and a relaxed coastal pace. The Great Ocean Road suits families, couples and friends alike, and it rewards those who slow down and take it all in.

Location

## Perfectly placed on Victoria’s south-west coast

The Great Ocean Road officially starts at Torquay, around an hour and a half’s drive south-west of the Melbourne CBD. It follows the coastline west to Allansford, near Warrnambool. Lorne is around two hours from Melbourne, Apollo Bay around three hours, and the Twelve Apostles around four hours via the coastal route. A faster inland route via the Princes Highway also reaches the western end. Avalon Airport, near Geelong, is the closest airport to the start of the road. Melbourne Airport is around an hour and a half from Torquay.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I do the Great Ocean Road as a day trip?**

It’s possible, but it makes for a very long day. A return trip from Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles can take 10 to 12 hours, with little time to stop. To enjoy the drive properly, we recommend at least two to three nights, staying in towns like Lorne, Apollo Bay or Port Campbell along the way.

**Which direction should I drive?**

Most travellers drive west from Torquay towards the Twelve Apostles. This keeps you in the lane closest to the ocean, making it easier and safer to pull into lookouts and scenic stops. You can return to Melbourne via the faster inland route.

**Is the road difficult to drive?**

The road is sealed and well maintained, but it is narrow and winding, with sharp bends, steep drops and few overtaking lanes. Take your time, use the pull-over bays to let faster traffic pass, and watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk. International visitors should remember that Australians drive on the left. Many accidents happen when drivers pull out of lookouts onto the wrong side of the road.

**When is the best time to see the Twelve Apostles?**

Sunrise and sunset offer the best light and smaller crowds. Late morning to mid-afternoon is busiest, when most day-tour coaches arrive. Weather on this stretch of coast changes quickly, so bring a warm, windproof layer even in summer.

**Are the beaches safe for swimming?**

Many Great Ocean Road beaches face the open Southern Ocean and can have strong rips and powerful surf. Swim only at patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags, such as those at Torquay, Lorne and Apollo Bay during the summer season. Never swim at the beaches below the Twelve Apostles or other cliff-top lookouts.

**Is there mobile coverage and fuel along the way?**

Mobile coverage can be patchy, particularly through the Otways and between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell. Fuel stops are also limited on this section. Fill up in larger towns before setting off, and download maps for offline use. Check VicTraffic before you travel for any road closures due to weather or landslips.
