## Your Sydney Northern Beaches escape

Sydney’s Northern Beaches are where the city slows down. A string of famous surf beaches runs north from Manly, each with its own village feel, whether it’s the buzz of the Corso, the boutique charm of Avalon or the relaxed luxury of Palm Beach. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the sheltered waters of Pittwater on the other, life here revolves around the water.

Start your morning with a swim in an ocean rock pool and spend the day surfing, kayaking or walking the clifftop trails. In the evening, settle in for a long waterfront dinner as the sun sets over Pittwater. The Northern Beaches suit families, couples and friends seeking a classic Sydney beach lifestyle, all within easy reach of the city.

Location

## Perfectly placed on Sydney’s coastline

The Northern Beaches stretch around 30 kilometres from Manly in the south to Palm Beach at the northern tip of the peninsula, between the Pacific Ocean and Pittwater. Manly is around 17 kilometres from the Sydney CBD, connected by ferries from Circular Quay. The B-Line express bus runs from the CBD up the peninsula to Mona Vale and Newport. By car, Manly is around 30–45 minutes from the city, and Palm Beach around an hour to an hour and a half, depending on traffic. Sydney Airport is around 45 minutes to an hour and a half away by road.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I get to the Northern Beaches from the city?**

The Manly ferry from Circular Quay is the most scenic option, taking around 20–30 minutes depending on the service. For beaches further north, the B-Line express bus runs from Wynyard to Mona Vale and Newport, with connecting buses to Avalon and Palm Beach. You can tap on and off ferries and buses with a contactless bank card, phone, smartwatch or Opal card.

**Is traffic a problem?**

It can be. Only a handful of main roads lead in and out of the Northern Beaches, and routes such as the Spit Bridge, Military Road and Pittwater Road get very congested during weekday peak hours and on summer weekends. If you’re heading to the airport or a fixed appointment, allow plenty of extra time.

**What’s parking like at the beaches?**

Parking at popular beaches fills up quickly on warm days and weekends, and many beachfront car parks have paid parking or time limits, especially in summer. Arrive early or use public transport when you can, and always check the signs to avoid fines.

**Are the beaches safe for swimming?**

Most Northern Beaches are patrolled by lifeguards and volunteer surf lifesavers, particularly during the warmer months. Always swim between the red and yellow flags, as many beaches have strong rips. On summer days with north-easterly winds, bluebottles can wash in, so check the beach signs and lifeguard updates. The ocean rock pools and Pittwater’s calmer bays are good alternatives for families and less confident swimmers.

**Which part of the Northern Beaches is best to stay in?**

It depends on your trip. Manly offers the most dining, shopping and nightlife, plus a direct ferry to the city. Dee Why, Collaroy and Narrabeen have relaxed surf beaches and ocean pools. Avalon, Whale Beach and Palm Beach at the northern end are quieter and more exclusive, ideal for a slower-paced escape, though they’re further from the CBD.
