Byron Bay sits on the far north coast of New South Wales, in the Northern Rivers region, around 50 kilometres south of the Queensland border. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is around 30 minutes’ drive south, and Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is around 45–50 minutes north. Brisbane is around two hours away by road. The hinterland villages of Bangalow and Mullumbimby are each around 15–20 minutes from town. The Pacific Motorway makes it easy to explore further along the coast.

- Which airport should I fly into?
Byron Bay is served by two nearby airports. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is the closest, at around 30 minutes’ drive, with flights from Sydney, Melbourne and other cities. Gold Coast Airport is around 45–50 minutes away and generally offers more flight options and times. Shuttle buses, taxis, rideshares and hire cars are available from both airports. Brisbane Airport is also an option, at around two hours away.
- Do I need a car in Byron Bay?
If you’re staying close to the town centre, you can easily walk or cycle to the main beaches, shops and restaurants. A car is worthwhile if you plan to explore the hinterland, visit Bangalow or Mullumbimby, or travel along the coast. Parking in and around town is limited and mostly paid, and spaces fill quickly in peak periods. Always check the signs and allow extra time.
- How busy does Byron get?
Byron Bay is very popular year-round and especially busy over the Christmas to January summer holidays, Easter, school holidays and long weekends. During these times, expect heavier traffic on the main road into town, busier beaches and longer waits at popular restaurants. Book accommodation, dining and tours well ahead.
- Are the beaches safe for swimming?
Several of Byron’s beaches are patrolled by lifeguards, including Main Beach, particularly during the warmer months. Always swim between the red and yellow flags. Some beaches, such as Tallow Beach, can have strong rips and powerful surf and are often unpatrolled. Sheltered Wategos Beach and the calmer conditions at The Pass are popular options, but check conditions and signage before you head in.
- Should I stay in town or in the hinterland?
It depends on your trip. Staying in or near town puts you within walking distance of beaches, dining and nightlife. Coastal pockets like Suffolk Park, Sunrise and Belongil offer a quieter feel close to the action. The hinterland offers more privacy, space and lush green views, ideal for a slower-paced retreat, though you’ll need a car to get around.
- When is the best time to visit?
Byron’s subtropical climate makes it a year-round destination. Summer brings warm water and long beach days, but also humidity, afternoon storms and the biggest crowds. Autumn and spring offer mild, sunny weather and calmer beaches. Winter is cooler but often clear and dry, and it coincides with whale-watching season along the coast.
