Frequently asked questions
- Which town should I base myself in?
It depends on your trip. Byron Bay has the most dining, nightlife and beach activity, but it is also the busiest. Bangalow and the hinterland offer a peaceful country setting close to Byron. Brunswick Heads is a relaxed, family-friendly coastal village with calm swimming spots. Lennox Head offers a quieter surf town atmosphere south of Byron. Mullumbimby has a creative, local feel at the base of the mountains.
- Where can children swim in calm water?
The region has several sheltered swimming spots ideal for families. Simpsons Creek at Brunswick Heads has calm, shallow water and grassy picnic areas. Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Head is a freshwater lake just behind the beach. In Byron, sheltered Wategos Beach is a popular choice. On the open surf beaches, always swim between the red and yellow flags.
- Can I climb Wollumbin (Mount Warning)?
No. The summit track at Wollumbin National Park is permanently closed to the public. The mountain is a sacred site for the Bundjalung people, and the closure reflects the wishes of its Traditional Custodians. You can still admire the mountain from lookouts across the region. The surrounding national parks offer many rainforest walks and waterfalls.
- Can flooding or heavy rain affect my trip?
The Northern Rivers can experience heavy rainfall, particularly in late summer and early autumn, and some low-lying roads and areas are prone to flooding. During periods of heavy rain, check road conditions and warnings through Live Traffic NSW and the Hazards Near Me NSW app before driving. Allow some flexibility in your plans, especially if you’re staying in the hinterland.
- When and where are the local markets held?
The region is known for its markets, with different villages hosting community, artisan and farmers markets on various days and weekends throughout the month. Popular markets include those in Byron Bay, Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Lennox Head. Check the current market dates before you travel, as they rotate and can change with the seasons.
- What should I know about driving in the hinterland?
Hinterland roads are often narrow, winding and steep, with sharp bends and limited overtaking opportunities. Take your time, especially after rain, and watch for wildlife such as wallabies and koalas, particularly at dawn and dusk. Mobile coverage can be patchy in some valleys, so download maps before you set out.
